US presidential trips internationally have traditionally been an chance to display the power of the United States on the world stage. Trump's multi-day tour through Asian nations, by contrast, has been a display of the clout of the leader – but also, at times, of that authority's limitations.

With the Chinese, the US leader may wave his power, but these moves come with consequences. They involve a price.

For the opening segment, Trump's most recent venture into global diplomacy was successful.

Each destination was marked by a combination of traditional economic talks – arrangements made under the shadow of Trump's "mutual" duties – and individual concessions that at points bordered on the obsequious.

In the Malaysian stop, Trump obtained rights to key materials and made progress toward finalizing commercial deals with ASEAN countries. He also presided over a pact that should alleviate frontier issues between Thailand and Cambodia – the kind of "peace agreement" the US leader prefers to highlight.

In the Japanese leg, Trump's Marine One soared near a famous structure displayed American colors – with a summit in gilded.

Freshly appointed Head Sanai Takaichi described $half-trillion in Japanese investments in the United States and presented the president a offering of two hundred fifty cherry trees for the United States' 250th anniversary, and a sports gear and carrier that came from former Prime Minister Abe, the murdered past head who connected with the president in his initial presidency.
