Those Siblings from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov breaks into a smile as he thinks about how his clan's life has transformed since relocating to England from Dagestan eight years ago.

"I am fond of it here," the Professional Fighters League athlete remarks.

"We frequently comment, 'this is the country I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the Caucasus region of Russia because his father was convinced a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles would provide superior professional opportunities for him and his brothers.

The original plan was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish their education before joining one of the nation's colleges.

But, reality has turned out quite different for the Ibragimov family.

Ibragim is now a pro mixed martial arts athlete and is regarded as one of the top prospects in the PFL, a prominent MMA league.

His siblings have chosen a separate route in sport and have all been signed by Manchester United – with Amir pushing for a spot in the first team.

"The main thing for us is to squeeze the maximum out of our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I hope them to represent every one of the best teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it could be a different team."

Starting as Wrestlers to Football Prodigies

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan holds a mystical status among fight fans for producing a number of UFC titleholders in the past few years.

The region has a rich tradition in wrestling, thriving in the sambo discipline and producing a host of Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is not a coincidence, however, as youth from the region are frequently pushed to take up combat sports, specifically wrestling, practically as soon as they can walk.

"When I was a kid, my dad was always telling me and my little brothers that we needed to be powerful, first to protect yourself, your family, and your companions," says Ibragim.

"So we all got used to combat, and which is why everyone knows how to fight in Dagestan. It's not a surprise."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the transition from wrestling to football; clearly, it helped my little brothers a lot."

"Some of the players he faces don't have the identical foundation he has. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly driven – due to wrestling."

Amir was just nine years old when he was put through his paces at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, trainers placed him with boys significantly older.

He was unfazed by the mistake and was perfectly capable holding his own against older players thanks to his experience in wrestling.

"They believed Amir and I were the identical age, so the story goes," remarks Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's little brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's stay in South Yorkshire was short-lived, though, as only weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he moved over the Pennines as a result.

"They played Manchester United in a tournament and Amir netted a spectacular free-kick," recalls Ibragim.

"One of their scouts watched him play and picked him straight away."

Half a dozen years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir became one of the youngest players in the club's history to train with the senior side when he achieved this in April 2023.

"Know what he told me? 'This is where I should be'," Ibragim reveals.

"Can he be a first-team player for Manchester United? 100%. They need to allow all the young players play now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the existing first-team players. I believe the youngsters are hungrier than the present squad members."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once part of the academy of Manchester City, have likewise made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this youngster is gifted," continues Ibragim.

"He picked up every skill faster than the others. He's a solid defender. He's going to be like a new Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Dream' to Compete at Old Trafford

Ibragim has now relocated to Manchester and spends most of his days sharpening his MMA abilities at a local gym.

In August, he passed three weeks in his native region at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, helping Islam Makhachev get ready for a late-year UFC championship bout.

"I never have thought I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we constantly used to look up to him when we were growing up."

"Now, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently training with two UFC champions from Dagestan, it is no surprise Ibragim states he is eager to claim a world title of his own one day.

But that does not stop him from sometimes fantasizing of playing for United and walking out on the hallowed turf at Old Trafford, similar to his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I always used to play as Man United, scoring with legendary players," he says.

"Today, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's like a fantasy realized."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was discussing with the PFL officials about it to see if they would make it happen. It would be huge."
