Those $150m Players Transforming a Human Highlight Reel
The NBA campaign starts this week, signaling the first time in a decade that Aussie pair of most prominent hoops stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are unsigned.
Their absence indicates a changing of the guard, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as key starters for playoff aspirants, with recently signed nine-figure contracts making them some of Australia’s top sporting earners.
But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are set to compete for minutes across the NBA, ranging from veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to intriguing rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
After lengthy discussions with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey finally signed his new deal worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four years recently. It’s a huge contract for the Melbourne native, but in NBA terms it is affordable for his role and profile as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the 23-year-old enters this season with much to prove.
After being moved by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, he watched as his former squad stormed to the NBA championship in his absence. As the Chicago aim to make the playoffs in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will have to show his scoring and defence are starter-worthy or else he may slide towards the NBA’s fringe.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard agreed to the same deal as his counterpart this week, and after his MIP honor last season, the Atlanta player's career has skyrocketed in the city following his departure from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one whole takeaway per game higher than the total of the runner-up.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be effective this season as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was subpar last season, and continue to enhance his passing and driving, Daniels could become one of the association's most versatile players.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana forward Furphy has emerged as a fan favourite in the state following a succession of spectacular dunks in exhibition games. His athletic displays led league figure Pat Beverley to label him as the “top Caucasian leaper we’ve seen in a while”, and an opportunity to the All-Star dunk contest could be on the table.
After playing just eight minutes per contest over 50 appearances in his debut season, the ex- college student is in the running for a Indiana rotation that might favor young players following injury to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor A Long-Range Threat
Playmaker the Sydney native dropped in the June draft all the way to the 49th pick, where playoff hopefuls Cleveland selected him. The Cavaliers are front-runners to make the NBA finals from the Eastern Conference, so it would be unusual for a first-year player drafted in the late picks to see much playing minutes. But the Sydney product has earned time in exhibition play, and his NBA-ready shot offers him a chance to make an impact.
Minutes Crunch Ahead for Veteran Quintet
Seasoned centre Jock Landale has a chance to secure the starting five spot in Memphis given top prospect Zach Edey will be out for the start of the campaign after ankle surgery.
In the Trail Blazers, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could play consistent action if the Blazers find themselves competitive. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is likely to be used as a defensive specialist in a reserve role.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder surgery has left him with no return date to return. The player still has a deal for next season, but will not want to give his teammates at the developing Hornets an excessive advantage. And a physical issue has already hindered Dante Exum, who has a knee complaint and has been absent for important pre-season opportunities in Dallas.
Australian NBA Players On the Fringe
Additionally, there are those who are unlikely to see a lot of, if any, court time this season. Thirty-eight-year-old Joe Ingles is back in Minnesota, but appears to be primarily a mentor ensuring Anthony Edwards focused.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by the Wolves through their G-League team. Other rookies Lachlan Olbrich in the Bulls and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the development pipeline, while the more seasoned Luke Travers will be hoping to win minutes with Proctor for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
If there were any doubts Mills was set to retire, he addressed it with a training clip posted on his social media recently, demonstrating the veteran is still in form and determined on securing one more NBA contract.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an off-season in his homeland, going fishing and playing with a football. Although he posted on Instagram recently to deny suggestions he was done, the former All-Star – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has not yet surface.
