This Swine Life: Pig Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as pardoning festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade had her own Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” stated the mayor in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “6-7” – inspired by a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a rural sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a cherished method to kick off the festive period,” said the cafe owner, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
