In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Defying suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Steering by Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my convictions for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
