The network's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network unveiled a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
