The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for Upcoming Project

The team behind popular RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its new project, generating immense anticipation within the industry. However, recent remarks from the studio's lead designer have added nuance to the discussion, addressing the studio's approach toward generative artificial intelligence.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a recent statement, Larian's director explained that the developer is using AI technology for certain preliminary functions. These involve enhancing pitch decks, creating rough artistic references, and writing temporary dialogue.

Notably, Vincke stressed that the shipping content in the game will be crafted entirely by real creatives. "We are developing all the content ourselves," he stated.

Our studio is actively growing our pool of writers and are busily forming writing teams.

Given that concept art is being particularly referenced — we presently have twenty-three concept artists and have positions available for additional creatives.

Each initiative we do is additive and aimed at letting our team spend greater focus on making content.

Every machine learning application used well is additive to a creative team workflow, not a substitute for their skill.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The revelation of AI usage at first sparked unease among portions of the community. In response, Vincke offered more clarification on public forums.

"Our team utilizes machine learning to research ideas, just like we use Google and art books," he stated. "During the conceptual planning process we use it as a rough outline for structure which we then swap out with hand-crafted illustrations."

He noted, "We've hired artists for their unique talent, not for their willingness to follow what a algorithm proposes."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had in the past detailed the team's targeted method to AI and ML, defining its use into primary pillars:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and technical processes like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using technology to speedily create basic versions of scenarios to test concepts before complete production.
  • Experimental Frontiers: Exploring how machine learning could one day enhance innovative reactivity, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.

He specifically stated that central narrative disciplines — like visual art — are not areas where the studio is replacing human involvement. On the contrary, Larian is actively hiring in these exact positions.

"Larian is neither launching a game with AI-generated content, nor looking at reducing staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke concluded.
