According to a former high-ranking official from the UK's largest police force, law enforcement are now required to disclose the racial identities of suspects in response to a surge in far-right speculation on online networks.

On Sunday morning, British Transport Police reported the arrest of two individuals after a multiple knife attacks on a railway carriage in the region. One suspect, a British citizen of black heritage aged 32, and a second, a 35-year-old of Caribbean descent, were taken into custody. Subsequently, the 35-year-old was released with no further action, and police stated he was not involved in the attack.

Updated Protocols to Fight False Claims

This past summer, new guidelines were issued to address the spread of misinformation on social media, which had intensified after the tragic murder of young students in a English town last summer.

However, campaigners have raised concerns that this approach could unintentionally encourage an overemphasis on the racial background of those accused and spark further extremist narratives when details are withheld with the general population.

Insights from a Former Officer

Dal Babu, who served in the UK's largest police force, labeled the requirement for police to disclose the race of individuals in incidents involving people of colour as an "unintended consequence".

“At the time the guidelines were introduced, I cautioned that there might be a risk of police being expected to disclose details in every instance,” he said.

He expressed sympathy for his former colleagues in the force, noting that they are “in a no-win situation”. “Pressure mounts due to rampant far-right speculation on social media following significant events, focusing on suspect backgrounds.”

Response from Officials

Ben Obese-Jecty, whose district includes Huntingdon, called it “sad” but necessary for police to swiftly release the racial identities of those detained.

“I don’t like it. I understand why they do it. I think they actually have to do it now,” he commented, stating that online platforms are leveraged to push agendas, making it critical for law enforcement to provide facts to counter speculation.

Extremist Manipulation of Events

Prior to the police announcement, right-leaning politicians had demanded a quicker action. As an example, Chris Philp urged for timely release of identity details, while the Reform UK leader stated on X that the people should be informed “as soon as possible”.

Additionally, far-right social media accounts attempted to exploit the event. One account named “UK Nationalist”—with nearly 5,000 followers—shared an baseless allegation that a knife-wielding man had been shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

Persistent Doubts

Even after authorities clarified that the suspects were UK citizens, certain figures continued to suggest that information was being withheld. Ben Habib claimed it was “hard to believe” that the attack was unrelated to terrorism, contrary to police assurances indicating otherwise.

Origin of the Directives

The guidance were created by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) in acknowledgment of “growing public anxiety” and to ensure law enforcement procedures were “fit for purpose in an age of rapid information spread”.

The initiative came shortly after Reform UK accused authorities of concealing the details and migrant background of individuals accused in a different incident in a UK county.

Previous Instances

In May, when a car ploughed into crowds marking a football victory, local authorities disclosed that the suspect was white and British to quash rumors of a terrorist attack by an individual of Asian origin.

The NPCC stressed that choices on releasing such information would be made by local departments, taking into account wider legal and ethical considerations. Verifying a suspect’s immigration status would fall to the Home Office, not law enforcement.
