Meteorological Balloons Employed to Contraband Cigarettes Closed Vilnius Airport
Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
