Israelis mark second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Citizens have come together throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in Gaza.
The incident resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' delegations met in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the morning session concluded without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not recommence fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for assistance deliveries
- After-conflict management of the region
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No location seems like home any longer and until all the hostages return not a single person will feel safe."
"Once we see everyone home returned, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "It's necessary do every compromise required for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population desire the conflict to conclude in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, mourners gathered to remember the victims.
From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the evening arrives, the fear arrives with it," relocated urban resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, explained.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."
Humanitarian Situation
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Another medical facility in the southern city of the city indicated another two victims had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli troops while seeking aid to the south, medics stated.
