British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."
His passing follows just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
By the 1990s, he started creating outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
